Things You Thought Were True About Osteoporosis

Things You Thought Were True About Osteoporosis
September 20, 2018
As we age, bone density and mass can dwindle and eventually lead to osteoporosis. Bone health can affect our posture, walk, and overall well-being if not taken care of properly. Knowing the facts about osteoporosis can lead you to better bone health.
There are many misconceptions about osteoporosis. These common things you thought were true about bone health may surprise you.
Lack of Calcium is the Cause of Osteoporosis
While calcium is undoubtedly a way to give your bones a health boost, it’s not the only thing that your bones require for optimal health. Taking in a high amount of calcium won’t protect your bones alone. For example, vitamin D is also essential to bone health. Lack of vitamin D causes your body to absorb less calcium than it should. Vitamins K and magnesium are also crucial nutrients.
Osteoporosis Is a Women’s Disease
Often osteoporosis is associated as “women only” problem. While low estrogen levels cause bone loss and many women who go through menopause may see these changes, men are susceptible too. Contributing factors that could lead to osteoporosis for both men and women are:
- Smoking
- Alcohol abuse
- Gastrointestinal disease
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Steroid medications
Osteoporosis Has no Warning Signs
While you may not be fully aware of your body’s bone loss, there are indeed some tell-tale signs you can look out for. Here are some common indications:
- Fractures
- Receding gums
- Weak or brittle nails
- Muscle aches
- Acidic PH levels
Maintaining healthy bones as you age should always be a priority. Proper diet and exercise can help stave off further bone loss.
