Couples Living Together

Couples Living Together

How Assisted Living Can be the Answer for Couples

You have worked hard your entire life, raised your family in the home you built, and don’t want to let go of that. But you have also reached a time in your life where you need help with some things, and it is starting to take it’s toll on your spouse. The thought of living apart after 50 years of marriage would be heartbreaking for any couple. Assisted Living may be the answer for you. You can still live together in a shared space, get the help you need, and stop worrying about your health, medications, bills, house maintenance. You will make new friends, have the opportunity to participate in recreational activities on a daily basis, focus on your wellness and expand your horizons. Less stress=higher quality of life.

Does one spouse have caregiver fatigue?

When one spouse’s health begins to decline and needs help, it is natural for the other spouse to step into the roll of caregiver, without a second thought. Reports have shown that caregivers who are caring for their spouse put in an average of 44 hours per week on caregiving tasks. That is more than a full-time job, in their golden years of retirement. The risk of caregiver fatigue, sometimes called caregiver burnout, in spouses puts them at a higher risk for depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances and heart disease. Caregiver stress can also negatively affect their immune system, leaving them vulnerable to getting sick more often.

What if one spouse requires more care?

At The Arbors you can utilize as little or as much care as you need. Whether you need just medication management or your needs are as complex as bathing, dressing and escorting; you will each have an individualized service plan, but still remain living together in beautiful large accommodations. If the need for memory care arises down the road, The Arbors at Islandia East has Memory Care, The SafeCare Neighborhood, specialized for those with Alzheimer’s or dementia, within the same building.

What kind of accommodations are there for couples?

Growing old together is something that every couple wants to enjoy, and here at The Arbors Assisted Living, we understand how important this is. That is why we offer an array of beautiful private rooms designed to help couples spend their twilight years together in each other’s arms. We have large one bedroom apartments with a living room and kitchenette, large bathrooms and plenty of closet space for the couple. With daily maintenance, weekly laundry, and 3 healthy chef-prepared meals daily, there is no work to be done. You can spend your day socializing, exercising, and learning new things. This new chapter can be seen as a new adventure together, as your home extends far beyond the walls of your apartment; the entire community is available for your use and enjoyment. You can hold hands at movie night, stroll through the courtyard together, pick up a new hobby together or separately.
