Ways to Combat Arthritis Flare-Ups

Having arthritis is painful and in some cases, the pain may be so severe it can even be debilitating. Unfortunately for elderly individuals arthritis is not uncommon. While arthritis may leave be restricting in some cases, here are some ways to manage arthritis pain and prevent flare-ups.
Diet
Your daily diet could be triggering your arthritis pain. There are certain foods can cause inflammation and may trigger an arthritis flare-up. If you have arthritis, stay away from sugary foods, fatty meats, dairy, and gluten. Instead, try adding the following foods to your diet to beat arthritis pain:
- Cruciferous vegetables —  broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cabbage
- Fatt fish — salmon, tuna, trout and mackerel
- Garlic
- Cherries
- Tumeric
- Fruits high in vitamin C – oranges, strawberries, pineapples
Exercise
While arthritis pain may not have you in the mood to exercise, getting in a routine of daily exercise can help reduce inflammation triggers. If you have limited mobility, exercises such as chair yoga or doing simple stretching while sitting can still help. Try incorporating these arthritis-friendly exercises and activities into your daily routine:
- Walking
- Water exercises
- Hand exercises
- Tai chi
- Gardening
Reduce Stress
Stress can trigger an arthritis flare-up. While it’s nearly impossible to remove yourself from every stressful situation, there are some ways you can reduce stress and relax. The following are some good ways to relax and stay calm:
- Take a warm bath
- Listen to your favorite music
- Watch a funny movie
- Read a book
- Color
- Take a walk
- Call a friend
