Warning Signs of PTSD in Elderly Adults

Various studies have reported that adults over 65 have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetimes. Symptoms of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) can occur or be triggered as a result of a traumatic event in the past or may occur following a new trauma — and one of the most common causes of trauma in the elderly are falls. If you are concerned about your elderly loved one and PTSD, here are some facts to know.

Warning Signs

Warning signs of PTSD may be observed by friends, family members, and professionals who interact with the individual on a regular basis. If a person has recently fallen, even if help arrived within an hour, symptoms of PTSD can occur.

Changes in Behavior

Behavioral changes to watch for are unusual sleeping difficulties as well as new problems with concentration, indecisiveness, or procrastination. The person may shift between past and present when speaking. They may even withdraw from their favorite activities and avoid contact with friends and family.

Feelings of Insecurity

Signs of distress may be evident when the person is reminded of a traumatic incident. There may be a change in their hopes or plans for the future. Gripping feelings of helplessness, horror, or intense fear may cause increased anxiety. They may appear preoccupied with dying, talk of suicide, or make frequent references to death in general.

Screening Leads to Help

Help is not far away. The first talk with your elderly loved one’s primary care physician. The most commonly prescribed treatment for PTSD is counseling. Counseling can help restore a person’s confidence and feelings of security, so that they may once again live life to the fullest.
