Why Are My Eyes Bloodshot?

A+ A-

assisted living long island

Waking up with bloodshot eyes can lead to a day of discomfort like no other. Instead of going through your day with eyes that constantly burn, look to make some much needed changes. In order to fix your bloodshot eyes, you’ll have to know why they’re like this in the first place.

They’re Dry
Dry eyes are caused by either dry air or not blinking for extended periods of time (like when you’re on your phone or computer). When the eyes become dry, they become irritated, inflamed, and start to turn red. If your home has a low humidity level, consider adding a humidifier. Otherwise, you’ll need to carry around eye drops of artificial tears.

Medication Side Effects
For those who are constantly taking medications such as antihistamines, anti-anxiety pills, or pain relievers, a common side effect is experiencing dry eyes. These medications will decrease blood flow to the eyes and the tissue that surround them. Consult with your doctor to discuss your medication and if you should be looking for an alternative or a special type of eye drops.

Lack of Sleep
Getting the recommended 7 to 8 hours of sleep is needed to keep all aspects of your body healthy, including your eyes. If a lack of sleep is the primary cause for your bloodshot eyes, then adjusting your sleeping habits is the only solution. Sure, you can use artificial tear eye drops for a quick relief, but more sleep is what you really need.

Knowing the reason why your eyes are bloodshot will help you fix this problem and avoid it in the future. For other useful tips and information, visit our blog!
