Which Food & Medication Pairings to Avoid

A+ A-

assisted living long island

As we age, certain medications are needed to make sure we remain in a healthy state. However, these medications can become ineffective or increase in intensity when paired with certain foods and supplements. That’s why everyone who takes medication should be aware of the foods they need to stay away from.

Fish Oil & Blood Thinners

Fish oil is known for its blood thinning effects. Since fish oil supplements are so concentrated, they shouldn’t be taken if you’re already taking a prescribed blood thinner. However, it is perfectly okay to consume normal portions of fish on a daily basis.

Grapefruit Juice & Statins for High Cholesterol

Drinking grapefruit juice or eating a grapefruit can obstruct the metabolism of statins that are taken to lower cholesterol and risk of cardiovascular disease. The dosages of atorvastatin (Lipitor), simvastatin (Zocor), and lovastatin (Altoprev & Mevacor) might not be fully absorbed by your body if you are consuming grapefruit juice. Either lay off of this citrus fruit or have your doctor prescribe you an alternative statin.

Cinnamon & Diabetes Medication

Diabetes medication is taken in order to help lower blood sugar to normal levels. Consuming a large amount of cinnamon (cinnamon supplements) can actually have a similar effect. That’s why a combination of both should be avoided, otherwise, blood sugar levels can become dangerously low. However, it is okay to cook with cinnamon and consume it in normal dosages.

Calcium & Heart Medication

Calcium channel blockers are drugs that will prevent calcium from entering the cells of the heart and blood vessel walls, thus lowering blood pressure. However, a high-calcium diet can counteract these drugs, leaving your blood pressure at a level that’s too high. Limit your intake of dairy and calcium supplements so your daily intake is under 1,000 milligrams per day.
