This is Why Your Feet Are Swollen

A+ A-

swollen feet | assisted living

Are your feet double in size and hurt with each step you take? Most of the time, swollen feet aren’t a serious medical concern, but they shouldn’t be ignored. If your feet won’t fit inside of your shoes, here are the reasons why.

Give the Dogs a Rest
Walking, standing, and always being on the move is great, but there can be too much of a good thing (especially as you age). For those who find themselves constantly on their feet, learn to take small breaks throughout the day. Most of the time the swelling will go down overnight as you sleep. However, if they swell up each day you should incorporate more sitting breaks.

Packing on the Pounds
If you’ve recently gained a bit of weight, your body might not be used to the added pounds just yet. If the extra weight can be lost, then begin exercising daily and eating a healthier diet. While you’re in the process of losing weight, make sure you keep taking increased sitting breaks throughout the day while keeping your feet elevated.

Bad Circulation
Head to the doctor and have him/her check you for varicose veins. These veins are filled with blood because the blood flow back to the heart is slowed down, or even cut off completely. Consult with a doctor to see how you can go about treating varicose veins and improve your blood flow.

Swollen feet aren’t something to be ignored — it’s your body telling you that something has changed, or that something needs to change. For other useful tips and information, visit our blog!
