Snacking is a mindless thing we all do because it keeps us busy — and because it tastes so good! One of the worst things to snack on are foods and drinks with a high sugar content. Not only can it assist with packing on the pounds, but it can lead to conditions like diabetes. Instead, utilize these sneaky tactics to cut down on the amount of sugar you snack on.
1. Sugar Has Many Names
Not only should you look at the sugar content on nutritional labels, but also under the ingredient list. Sugar can be listed in its multiple forms, such as dried cane syrup, high fructose corn syrup, molasses, sucrose, etc. If a food or drink item has multiple forms of sugar listed on the label, this is something you should avoid consuming altogether.
2. Unsweetened Is Better
Many different types of drinks and foods have an unsweetened version or one with no additional sugar or sweeteners added. Almond milk, canned fruit, juices, and nut butters are a few products that have unsweetened and “no sugar added” versions.
3. Choose Natural Over Processed
Cutting sugar out of your diet altogether can have negative health effects as well, so you should have some sugar in your diet. However, instead of reaching for a bag of candy or a bottle of soda, opt for a piece of fruit. While fruit does have a good serving of sugar, it doesn’t come close to the amount that’s in junk food.
4. Trick Your Tongue
Rather than giving into your sugar cravings, consider pouring yourself a cup of tea. Tea that is infused with ginger, cinnamon, mint, or any other type of slightly sweet flavor can help deter your cravings. Unsweetened tea isn’t for everyone, so for those who need a small amount of sweetness in their lives, consider adding a touch of real honey.
5. It’s All About Balance
Consuming some sugar each day is needed, so it’s all about balancing how much you intake. Rather than having one serving of something sugary, cut it in half. This way you’ll be able to satisfy your craving without having as much. However, if you consume more sugar than you should earlier on in the day, make the conscious decision to skip all things sugar for the rest of the day.
Cutting down on the amount of sugar you consume (especially during snack time) can be tough, but there are ways to rise above this sweet dilemma!
