How to Know It’s Time for Assisted Living

Caring for a loved one who is in a physical or mental decline is an act of love, but it can also take a toll on the caregiver and their family. Deciding it is time to put a senior in assisted living is a difficult decision. However, there are a few signs that this may be the best choice for everyone.

Caregiver Stress

Caregivers are the type that often do not like to admit that they are stressed. However, stoicism can lead to a mental or physical decline in the caregiver, leading to an inability to give a loved one everything that they need. As the needs of the senior increase, we have to ask ourselves what it is doing to us. If we are suffering from a lack of sleep, frequent illnesses, or have health issues of our own, it is time to take an honest look at an assisted living community.

Mental Changes

As dementia progresses, the person may experience aggression. They may also develop what is called sundowner syndrome. This is when the person becomes more agitated in the later part of the day. Aggression and sundowner syndrome can affect family routines and cause stress for the entire family. Even though we know that our loved ones are not truly striking out against us, it is still difficult behavior, and will eventually take its toll. These behaviors increase as dementia worsens. If you have ever thought that you cannot take it anymore, then it is time to find a community of professional caring individuals who can give your loved one the support that they need.

Home Safety

The number one sign that it is time to move your loved one to a community is if they are unsafe in their home environment. If they forget to do things such as turn off the stove or are unable to prepare their own meals, then it is time to get help. Another concern is if they experience falls, are in danger of hurting themselves with sharp objects, or can no longer be trusted with medications, then it is time to seek assistance.

Change is never easy, but when these signs appear, it is time to call a community that can provide support. This is the most loving thing that you can do for everyone, so call our community so that we can discuss the many options that are available.
