How to Treat Restless Leg Syndrome

Do you suffer from restless leg syndrome? This neurological sleep and movement disorder can be brought on because of certain medications or naturally due to a multitude of biological reasons. However it’s developed, there are ways to minimize the symptoms of restless leg syndrome that you can apply to your daily life.

Combination of Exercise & Relaxation

Exercising regularly for at least 30 minutes per day will work the muscles in your legs to help lower symptoms of RLS. You don’t want to overdo it or workout too late in the day. Therefore, keep the exercising to a brief and non-strenuous regiment. You also want to make sure your legs are in a relaxed position for a good portion of time at the end of the day before you head off to bed.

Correcting Vitamin Deficiency

Lacking certain vitamins and minerals can cause a variety of health complications and conditions. Deficiencies in vitamin B, folic acid, iron, and magnesium can contribute to RLS symptoms. Ask your doctor to test your vitamin levels and see if you’re allowed to take supplements for these vitamins and minerals. Make sure your doctor gives you the go ahead, as an increase in certain vitamins could interfere with any current medications you may be taking.

Cutting Out the Negatives

There are certain things you can do to aggravate the symptoms of RLS. First and foremost, avoid sitting in a single position for too long. While you do need to relax your muscles (especially before bed), change positions or get up for a minute so you can stretch. You should also watch what you eat and drink. Caffeinated foods like coffee, tea, soft drinks, and even chocolate can worsen symptoms. Try to also limit alcohol consumption and smoking, at least for a few weeks to see if symptoms dissipate.

If you’re sick of living in pain because of RLS, consider adopting a few of these changes to help soften the symptoms. For other useful tips and information, visit our blog!
