How to Age Well When You Have MS

How to Age Well When You Have MS
August 8, 2017
Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) is not an easy feat — especially for seniors that already need assistance with daily activities. This incurable disease is said to cause accelerated aging, making it harder for you to get through the day. For those who have recently been diagnosed, or have had MS for a very long time, here are some tips to help you age well.
Create a Daily List
Multiple sclerosis can limit the amount of things you can get done in a single day. Therefore, you need to plan and utilize your time wisely. Start each day by creating a list of all the things you would like to get done. Prioritize this list by importance, and then cut this list in half. Between each task you complete, take small breaks so you feel rested before taking on another task.
Find Ways to Exercise
Mobility can be limited for those diagnosed with MS, but that doesn’t mean you should live a sedentary lifestyle. Due to this lack of mobility, those with MS have an increased risk of developing heart disease. Therefore, you need to find ways for you to exercise on a regular basis. Physical therapists are your best bet for giving you the optimal exercises for you to stay active.
Stay in the Right Mindset
The daily challenges and limitations that come with MS can cause any person to feel down in the dumps. However, if you focus on all of the positives in your life and learn to appreciate the small victories, your outlook and mindset can be a positive one. Thinking in this way will allow you to live a happier life with a reduced risk of developing depression or anxiety.
