We all love to enjoy the outdoors as well as all benefits of being out in the sun such as getting a dose of Vitamin C and feeling great. However, harmful UV rays can be especially dangerous to senior skin as sun damage, and skin cancer becomes more of a risk with age. Here are some tips to keep your elderly senior protected and safe while outdoors.
Apply Sunscreen Often
Wearing sunscreen can help safeguard your skin against damaging UV rays. Choose a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. If you will be in the sun for a prolonged amount of time, be sure to reapply.
Wear Protective Clothing and Accessories
When heading outdoors during the summer months, you’ll want to stay as cool as possible. While the thought of wearing long sleeves or pants when it’s hot outside makes you sweat already, here are some options that can still keep your skin healthy and cool:
- Wear lightly colored loose clothing
- Choose breathable fabrics such as cotton
- Wear wide-brimmed hats to protect your face
- Choose large-framed sunglasses for eye protection
Stay in The Shade
Spending your time in shaded areas can keep you from out of direct sun exposure. You can still enjoy the beautiful weather, without worrying too much about the sun directly shining on your skin. Seeking shade, along with wearing the right clothing and sunscreen is the best way to stay fully protected!
