As we age, it’s not uncommon for us to develop sleeping problems. It’s estimated that about 50% of seniors have sleeping disorders, ranging from insomnia to sleep apnea or even restless leg syndrome. Without a good night’s rest, our minds and bodies won’t be able to function throughout the day entirely. So what can be done about this?
There are a few things that seniors can do to improve their sleep and make sure they’re getting the rest they need:
Stay Away From Caffeine Before Bedtime
It’s best to stay away from any caffeinated drinks for at least six hours before planning on heading to bed. No matter how delicious that dessert coffee seems, falling asleep will become a difficult task when your body is jittery and energized!
Establish a Regular Sleeping Schedule
Falling asleep and waking up at different hours every day is bound to make anyone tired! Without regularity, our bodies won’t have time to find resting and reset periods. Try to go to bed and get up around similar hours each day, allowing your body to get used to this schedule.
Avoid Screen Time
Watching television or surfing the web can be regular routines that seniors get into, but it’s not the best idea to have the TV on before or while going to bed. A good alternative would be to read some books before bed. Not only does reading help sharpen the mind, but it also is a healthier alternative for your eyes before sleep.
