The Arbors Assisted Living at Westbury had a quilting show on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 to showcase the quilts residents have been working on for the past few months. With the support of the Evening Star Quilt Guild board of directors, community service chairperson Cathy Devlin began a class at the Arbors Assisted Living at Westbury on February of 2012. Volunteers Lina Tokarski, Carol Mottola, Evelyn Dombrowski and Connie Calies-Meule joined the group and they met with the residents 4x a month. Lacking a sewing machine, they began hand-piecing the basic 4-patch. By August, the group had produced 105 blocks. They sorted them into attractive color combinations and pieced them into three quilts. Together they created a layout for each quilt, and brainstormed a title for each quilt. “Happy Days, “Ella’s Blues” and “Melody” became the names. These quilts will then be donated to charity. As piecing these quilts were completed, the group began another project. Using fabric from home décor sample books, they pieced together pillow covers. These pillows will be donated to families whose possessions were lost in Hurricane Sandy. They are very pleased with the work they have done and this project could not have been possible without the generous support from many members of the Evening Star Quilt Guild located in Mineola.
