When You Should Worry About Your Parents Driving

When You Should Worry About Your Parents Driving
October 27, 2017
As your parents grow older, it’s important to keep a close eye on their actions. Anything out of the ordinary could signify a decline in their mental or physical state. The next time you get into a car with one of them at the wheel, here’s what you should be looking for:
Pedal Troubles
The act of lifting your entire leg up and moving it from the gas to the brake pedal could be a sign of low leg strength. This means there isn’t enough strength to press the pedals with just their toes, like you should. Also, keep an eye out for confusion between the two pedals and late reaction times.
Ignoring Basic Rules
Do you notice your loved one failing to stop at stop signs, failing to slow down for yellow lights (not just trying to beat them), or forgetting to use their directional? All of these basic rules of the road should be followed, and failure to do so could be due to forgetfulness or memory loss.
Staying in the Lane
Keep an eye on their ability to stay in their own lane. See if the car appears to be weaving in and out of the lane and coming dangerously close to other cars. This could be an indication of declining motor skills that could eventually cause them to get into an accident.
Lack of Road Rage
We all know that road rage isn’t something to be proud of. However, not getting frustrated at all while in the car could be a negative sign. Having no reaction toward other drivers who are going too slow or that cut them off could expose a lack of alertness. Don’t look for them to scream, but keep an eye out for frustration.
Driving can be dangerous for all drivers, but a person without all of their cognitive abilities and quick motor skills can lead to a serious accident.
