The Arbors at Islandia East celebrated Sadie Silver’s 100th birthday yesterday! She was born and raised in Brooklyn October 7, 2015. Her parents came from Austria. She went to Thomas Jefferson H.S. in Brooklyn and graduated from CUNY . She started her career for NYC in the Police Department where she was a clerk, she remembers doing pistol permits. When she retired in 1975 after 40+ years she was the Chief Financial Officer at NYC Social Services Department, she made up the budgets as well as audited NYC Day Care Services. She was on the board for Day Care after she retired.
Sadie had 7 brothers and sisters there are 3 family members still alive including Sadie’s sister Doris who still lives with her at The Arbors. Her sister Rose lived until 102. I guess you could say her family has great genes!
After she retired she traveled and she started her hobby of making greeting cards, and making refrigerator magnets with sayings and pictures of family members and friends. She has a great collection of rubber stamps. Growing up Sadie also made her own clothes. She likes to read poetry.
Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi was here to present Sadie with a Proclamation; and she received a card from the White House, signed by President and Mrs Obama. Happy Birthday Sadie and we look forward to celebrating many more with you.
