How Seniors Can Stay Active
Even though we are well into the new year, it’s still not too late to make a resolution to keep active and move more. Whether you have limited mobility or not, here are three exercises that any senior can try without leaving their home. Each is easy to learn, has a straightforward execution, and can be modified to accommodate your fitness level.
Chair Stands
Start seated in a sturdy and firm chair with your feet about hip-width apart. Place your hands on your lap and gently push into your heels to raise slightly from the seat. Hold for a couple of seconds and then lower back to the chair. Repeat this up to ten times before resting.
Chair stands are an excellent way to build strength in your legs and knees if you are a senior. They provide stability to the knee and hip joints, which can improve balance and coordination.
Heel to Toe Walk
This exercise is done exactly as its name implies. Start by standing tall and look straight ahead. Now carefully place one foot in front of the other so that the heel of your front foot touches the toe of your rear one. Take several steps forward. Raise your arms out to the side for balance or walk along a wall or counter for support if it makes you feel more comfortable.
Despite the simplicity of this exercise, it can help increase coordination and balance. Also, because it targets the muscles in your hips, it can help you improve your stamina and stability.
Side Leg Lift
This exercise may help improve balance and hip flexibility. Start by standing next to a wall or counter. Make sure your shoulders are lined up over your hips. While looking straight ahead, slowly and gently raise one leg out to the side, then lower it down.
