Tips for Living with Glaucoma

Your vision helps you to see the precious smiles on your loved one’s faces. You also rely upon good vision to maintain your independence as much as possible. Living with glaucoma doesn’t mean you can’t be active and live your best senior life. Here are some ways to cope.

Use Your Prescribed Medication

You may be taking prescriptions for pills or drops that are designed to help lower the pressure in your eyes. Make sure to take these medications exactly as they are prescribed. Skipping a dose can minimize the effects that you want to achieve for stopping the progression of glaucoma.

Start a Safe Exercise Program

Taking care of your health helps to slow down the progression of glaucoma. Regular movement helps to keep the pressure in your eyes low. However, certain types of exercises can increase eye pressure. For instance, certain yoga poses that put your head in a downward position may not be safe. Therefore, you need to strike a healthy balance for movement each day. Talk to your doctor about the best types of exercise to do to improve your eye health without adding additional pressure.

Refrain From Smoking

Smoking has long been known to increase the risk of eye disease. Not only does smoking increase your blood pressure, but it can also reduce blood flow to your eyes. Quitting this habit now can prevent you from developing other eye health issues that impact your condition.

Sleep With Your Head Elevated

Slightly elevating your head at night helps to reduce the pressure in your eyes. Look for wedge-shaped pillows that are designed for this purpose. It might take a few nights to get used to it, but you’ll find that it helps to keep the pressure from building up in your eyes overnight.
