Common Health Concerns for Seniors

senior-care-health

Growing older comes with a life’s worth of experiences and memories. However, old age can also bring along a few different health concerns. Being aware of these health concerns can keep you and your family ahead of the curve for implementing preventative measures.

Alzheimer’s Disease
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in nine people over the age of 65 live with some form of Alzheimer’s disease. Since it is extremely difficult to diagnose this disease in its early stages there could be even more people affected by it. Letting a loved one live unmonitored with this disease could have extreme consequences to their health.

Falls
Taking a nasty spill could be just an accident, but with age this could become a recurring theme. One-third of seniors who end up in the emergency room due to a fall will usually wind up back there within one year. Many falls will happen because of area rugs or in the shower; so living home alone can be very dangerous for those who have fallen in the past.

Obesity
Unfortunately, over 70 percent of all men and women between the ages of 65 and 74 are considered overweight. Walking the fine line of being overweight and obese is one of the worst health risks that can lead to increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Those in this age bracket who are overweight need to adjust their diets as well as increase their mobility by exercising.

Depression
Not only will exercising decrease your weight, but it will also decrease your risk of depression. Since depression affects almost 20 percent of people over 65, staying active and socializing are recommended. Being depressed can also affect your health by lowering your body’s ability to fight off disease. Talking with friends, playing games, and going for walks are great ways to combat depression.

Taking the time to inform yourself and your family of the major health concerns for seniors is the first step in preventing them from happening. Luckily, The Arbors communities offer on-site doctors, health conscious meals, exercise classes, and a community of friendly residents looking to make new friends!
