5 Safety Tips for the Hot Weather

summer-safety-tips

Summertime is finally here and the weather is really starting to warm up! Going for walks and eating lunch outside are wonderful experiences this time of year, but they can be dangerous if it gets too hot out.

  • Avoid the Daytime – When the sun is beaming down those harsh UV rays on a hot day, avoid going outside until later on. Try to wait until the sun begins to set to avoid getting sunburn or heatstroke. From this time of day on, temperatures will begin to lower and become a bit more bearable.
  • Drink Up – Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do on a hot day. Whether you’re inside or outside, be sure to drink an adequate amount of water. Try to stay away from delicious drinks that will dehydrate you such as coffee, soda, and alcohol.
  • Summer Attire – It’s fairly obvious that you shouldn’t wear a sweater on a hot summer day. Instead, you should be wearing loose clothing that will allow your body to breathe and not be constricted by your clothing’s material. Try to also stick with light colors as dark colored clothing will absorb more heat.
  • Protection – Going outside on a hot day won’t just put you at risk for heatstroke or dehydration, it will also put you at risk for some serious sunburn! Deter those harmful UV rays by applying sunblock to your skin 20 minutes before stepping outside. As for the SPF number, put the tanning oil down and grab a lotion that’s at least 15 or higher.
  • Stay Cool – Venturing outside on a sunny day is a wonderful experience, but when it’s too hot out it can be a dreadful experience. When the temperatures begin to soar, spend your day inside in the air conditioning. The A/C unit is your friend on these days and will protect you from feeling faint. Use this opportunity to relax, socialize with friends, enjoy a movie, or play some games.

The days can really heat up during the summertime and you should always be cautious, especially if you’re going to spend the day outside. Luckily, at The Arbors there’s a daily itinerary with a long list of things to do on the days where it’s just too hot to go outside.
