Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Doctor Visits

assisted living in long island

Going to the doctor’s office isn’t an ideal way to spend a portion of your day, but it’s a visit that’s much needed. Rather than just showing up, listening, and going home, there are things you can actively do to make your doctor visits as beneficial as possible!

  • Come With Notes – When you go to the doctor, there’s a specific reason for your visit (or multiple reasons). Whether it’s a checkup, an issue you want looked at, or if you have questions about medication, you are there to get your doctor’s insight and advice. Before you go, make a short list of all the questions and issues you have so you won’t forget to ask anything. Nothing is worse than remembering something you forgot to ask when you’re on your way home.
  • What Are Your Concerns? – Many people will go to their doctor and tell them what their complaints are. However, not many will communicate to their doctor about what their concerns are. You might tell the doctor what’s wrong with you, but you should also let them know what worries you about this specific condition, medication, or surgery. When a doctor knows the issue AND the concerns, they can recommend the best course of action tailored to your needs.
  • Take Notes – Doctors receive years upon years of education to obtain all of their knowledge. So when they communicate some of this information to you, it can be a little overwhelming. Bring a notepad to jot some things down. A lot of information can be overlooked or forgotten, but you can keep up and remember things for later when you have it all written down!
  • Be Honest – Your doctor is someone you should be able to trust and be open with. Let them know ALL of your problems so they can do their best to keep you healthy. If you’re holding back information, they won’t be able to help you to the best of their ability. On the other hand, if your doctor isn’t understanding the information you’re telling them, say something. When you have an issue that isn’t being understood completely, let your physician know so they can try to understand the situation better.

A visit to the doctor’s office shouldn’t be an in and out thing, so make sure you get the most from your next visit. For other useful tips and information, visit our blog!
