Signs That Point Toward Assisted Living

assisted living long island

Whether it’s a parent, relative, or close friend, everyone has an elder person that they look up to. As this person gets older, you want them to be safe and healthy for as long as they can. Unfortunately, allowing them to live alone during their golden years isn’t always the right answer. If you’re wondering if their current living situation is right for them, ask yourself these questions first:

Are you finding bruises on your loved one?

  • Signs of bruises can mean that they are falling on a more regular basis. Some seniors might cover these bruises so keep an eye open.

Do you find your loved one wearing the same outfit each time you make a visit?

  • Wearing the same clothing over and over again can signify that they aren’t taking the time to groom themselves anymore. A lack of hygiene could mean that they are giving up on simple tasks or that they are becoming increasingly forgetful.

Is the medication they are prescribed being taken? Are any of the prescriptions expired?

  • Check all prescriptions and pill boxes to see if the right pills are being taken on the right days, a the right times. Forgetting to take medication can lead to further health problems.

Does the house they currently live in have the proper safety features?

  • Having rugs pinned down, safety bars installed, and emergency response systems put in place is recommended for most seniors.

How often does your loved one socialize with friends and family members?

  • Check to see if they have company often, or at least see if they talk on the phone to their friends and family on a regular basis.

When you look at your loved one, are they the same person you’ve always known?

  • A negative change in energy levels and their ability to help themselves could mean that leaving them on their own is a possible risk.

Answering these questions will help you decide if it’s okay for your elderly loved to live alone, or if it’s time to have the conversation about assisted living.
