How to Keep Your Heart Healthy as a Senior

happy elderly couple exercising

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women, so much so that 1 person in every 4 of us succumbs to it. In order to learn how to keep our hearts in good condition, consider this article your go-to guide for various tips.

Exercise

The key to a healthy lifestyle is staying active. When our bodies undergo regular exercise, our blood pressure is maintained at healthy levels. We also increase your energy levels that in turn keep our hearts and bones strong. Before we set off on an exercise routine, we should consult our doctors. Our doctors are well aware of our health history and can prescribe an exercise program that aligns with it.

Eat Healthy

As the saying goes, we are what we eat, it cannot get any more accurate than that. We should consume fresh fruits and vegetables, and a diet rich in fiber and lean proteins. We must ensure our diet is low in saturated fats, sugars, and salt. These three ingredients contribute to conditions like blood pressure and weight gain in various ways.

Get Proper Sleep

Some of us can face severe sleep problems and despite sleeping late or lightly we end up waking up early. Getting proper sleep is crucial. An ideal amount of sleep is 7 to 8 hours. According to a research, people who sleep less than 5 hours have a greater risk of developing diseases.

Go Stress-Free

Last but not least, we should minimize stress. Stress in its chronic form can damage the artery walls, negatively affect the immune system, and cause blood pressure and heart rate to rise. We must try our best to live stress-free and train ourselves to release stress and not retain it.

Having our needs taken care of on time and properly can make a whole lot of difference. The Arbors Assisted Living is a community that works with support and compassion for the elderly. We provide a variety of activities that constitute a good, healthy lifestyle. Contact us today to learn more.
