How Holding a Grudge Can Harm Your Health

assisted living long island

Are you the type of person that will typically stay mad at someone for extended periods of time — maybe for too long? Unfortunately, studies have shown that not only are these grudges not doing you any good, they’re actually hurting your health. If you’re looking to be a healthier person all around, start by learning to let go!

Grudges and Your Health

The physical burden of holding onto a grudge stems from being upset, disappointed, or angry on a frequent basis. This chronic-anger will keep a person in what’s called a “fight-or-flight” mode where they experience a constant increase in blood pressure, heart rate, and immune response. Experiencing this often can eventually lead to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and depression. On the other hand, learning to let go and forgive someone will lower your stress levels and keep you in good health.

How to Be More Forgiving

  • A Moment of Reflection – Take time to sit and think about the events or moments that made you mad in the first place. Now think about all of the anger you’ve felt since then and how it has negatively affected you.
  • Learn to Empathize – Always try and get the other person’s side of the story. Oftentimes, you’ll find a hidden reason on why they did or said something that angered you.
  • No One is Perfect – Those who forgive just because they don’t want to ruin their relationship oftentimes find themselves in a worse situation. Instead, forgive a person because they made a mistake — and everyone makes mistakes every once in awhile. Understanding that no one is perfect can help you live a more carefree life when it comes to those who wrong you.
  • Don’t Look for an Apology – If all you want is an apology, you could be waiting for a very long time. There are times where a person doesn’t know they’ve wronged you, so they won’t feel the need to apologize. Learn to forgive without expecting anything in return and you’ll be a happier person because of it.

No one wins when you hold a grudge — in fact, you’ll experience worse health and possibly lose a friend in the process. For other useful tips and information, visit our blog!
