Dental Care Tips For Seniors

How to Take Care of Your Teeth

Taking care of your teeth not only keeps your pearly whites healthy, but it can also have a positive impact on your overall health too. As we get older, we can develop a lot more oral problems that can lead to many different health issues. Keep your choppers in good shape with these dental hygiene tips.

Check Your Toothbrush

If you can’t remember the last time you replaced your toothbrush, then it’s probably time to do so. According to the American Dental Association, your toothbrush should be replaced every three to four months to avoid bacteria from lingering. Bacteria on your toothbrush can lead to gingivitis or periodontitis. Choosing the proper toothbrush for your specific dental needs is important too. Bristles that are too soft or too hard may not be right for you. Check with your dentist on what type of toothbrush is best for you.

Floss Regularly

Food that is wedged between the teeth can lead to bad breath if not removed. Flossing can get rid of food particles quickly. While flossing is the best way to remove food particles, a Waterpik can get the job done too.

Avoid Using Tobacco

Smoking and other tobacco use are not only bad for your lungs but bad for your teeth and gums too. Using tobacco in any form can put you at risk of developing gum disease, periodontal disease, and oral cancer.

Don’t Miss Your Dental Checkups

Keeping up with regular dental visits can help you catch oral problems sooner than later. When visiting your dentist, be sure to tell them of any changes or pain you are experiencing since your last visit. If there are any issues, your dentist can help you find a solution to the problem before it becomes more prominent.
