New Year’s Resolution Checklist for Caregivers

Avoiding Caregiver Burnout

Caring for an elderly loved one can be rewarding, yet emotionally and physically taxing. Caregivers often forget to partake in self-care because they have so many other things to worry about. Burning the candles at both ends is not good for both the caregiver and the person being cared for — and that can mean getting deeper into caregiver burnout. Here are four tips on how to give yourself some TLC in the new year!

1. Improve Patience

Every caregiver knows that caregiving can test a person’s patience at times. Elderly seniors may be used to caring for themselves and when you have rules they need to abide by for their own well-being, you may get a little pushback. As a caregiver, one resolution this next year can be to work on improving patience. While you enjoy caring for your elderly loved one, having more patience can make it that much more enjoyable and help keep frustrations at bay.

2. Develop Stronger Relationships

You spend a lot of time with your elderly loved one. Take your time to develop a deeper bond. When you bond on a deeper level, you’ll find they will feel included in decisions thus giving them better care.

3. Ask For Help When Necessary

Everyone needs help from time to time. While you may be able to handle most of your required everyday tasks, it’s okay to admit when you need help at times. Speak up when you’re overwhelmed and ask a family member, friend or neighbor or assistance.

4. Take Care of Yourself

During the safety announcement on a plane, the stewardess tells the passengers to equip themselves with an air mask before assisting others. There is a reason for this —  to take care of themselves first in order to be able to help other passengers. In a similar light, you need to take care of yourself so that you can take care of the residents in an assisted living community.
