Snacks to Eat When You Have High Cholesterol

Did you know eating at regular intervals, multiple times per day is better for your health than eating just three big meals per day? Now that you know you should be eating more often, don’t think you can reach for that bag of chips or box of cookies. There are a handful of cholesterol-friendly foods you should be snacking on throughout the day.
Popcorn
Ditch the movie theater popcorn covered in butter and salt and opt for a plain air popped popcorn. This tasty snack actually has more whole grains and fiber than whole-wheat bread and brown rice. The more fiber in your diet, the better chance you have at lowering your cholesterol levels. If you’re looking to dress up your healthy popcorn, add a dash of extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese (wow).
Fiber-Rich Oatmeal
Don’t just think of oatmeal as a breakfast food, it can be enjoyed as a snack at any point in the day (mix in some fruit for additional flavor). Within a high-fiber oatmeal, there are special soluble fibers that will absorb cholesterol and move it through your digestive system without it being absorbed by your body. This fiber will also increase the amount of bile your liver produces to help lower LDL cholesterol levels within the body.
Specific Fruits
Pectin is a type of fiber that can help lower LDL cholesterol levels. Foods that are high in pectin are select fruits like apples, strawberries, grapes, and oranges. Potassium-rich foods like bananas can also aid in controlling blood pressure. A food with both high amounts of pectin and potassium are clementines, so reach for this when you’re craving something sweet!
