Why Hydration is So Important

Why Hydration is So Important
July 21, 2016
Staying properly hydrated is very important for your health, especially as you get older. Dehydration can happen easily in seniors due to the loss of total body water over time AND the decrease in your body’s sense to realize that you are dehydrated. Knowing all of the information about staying hydrated is super important for your health.
Common Symptoms of Dehydration
- Lack of Urine
- Dark Colored Urine
- Dry Mouth
- Dry Skin
- Low Blood Pressure
- Lethargy
How Much Should You Drink?
The general rule is to drink at least eight cups of water per day, or 64 fluid ounces. Drinking a half-gallon of water per day is recommended for the average person, but certain health conditions could require you to drink more or less. Spread your water consumption throughout the day rather than all at once for proper hydration.
Tips For Optimal Hydration
- If you feel like you’re dehydrated, there’s no need to chug as much water as you can. Instead, drink small amounts of water, frequently. This way your body will have time to absorb and utilize the water.
- It is true that ALL fluids count towards your daily requirement, but you should drink water with your soda, beer, and juices. Either add water to them, or drink half of a drink and a small cup of water.
- Ever notice that you have to go to the bathroom shortly after eating a bowl of watermelon? Eat foods that have a high water content like fruits, vegetables, even frozen ices.
- If you’re severely dehydrated, seek immediate medical attention. A doctor or nurse will be able to hydrate you properly in a short period of time.
Becoming dehydrated can happen very easily, but as long as you remember these tips, you’ll be A-Okay!
