How to Lose Weight as a Woman Over 60

How to Lose Weight as a Woman Over 60
October 2, 2017
Being over the age of 60 means you’re a senior citizen, or very close to it. As we age, it can seem like it’s harder to lose weight and be fit. But as long as you follow a few of these tips, you’ll be able to shed some unwanted pounds in a very healthy way.
Don’t Focus on the Scale
If you’re worrying about the number that appears on the scale, then you’re already setting yourself up for failure. Instead, place all of your focus on losing fat — not weight. An easy trick to keep in mind is to never have a waist size that is more than half of your height. Being 5’5” (65 inches) means you should strive to have a waist size below 32.5”.
Keep On Drinking
Make sure you’re drinking enough water each day to stay hydrated. The older we get, the more our bodies mistake thirst for hunger. This will cause us to eat more and drink less, which can also mess with a person’s digestion and metabolism. Be sure to drink regular intervals of water throughout the day.
Up Your Protein Intake
The RDA of protein is substantially low, especially for those who are experiencing age-related muscle loss. Instead of getting roughly 50 grams of protein per day, aim to consume at least 30 grams of protein per meal. This additional protein can help build and repair muscle, especially when it’s combined with resistance training.
Strength Training is Key
Exercise should consist of stretching, aerobics, and resistance training. When participating in resistance training, it’s okay to start off slow with lighter weights. However, make sure you are always increasing the weight being used. Failing to do so will limit the amount of strength and muscle you can build. Strength training might sound like it’s only for the youth, but all ages should participate in this type of exercise.
Just because you’re identified as a senior citizen, doesn’t mean you can’t look like you’re in your 40s — so go get ‘em girl!. For other useful tips and information, visit our blog!
