Winter Readiness for Caregivers: Do You Have a Plan?

January 6, 2026

Winter can bring beautiful moments—but it also brings unique challenges for seniors and their caregivers. Snowstorms, icy sidewalks, power outages, and colder temperatures can all impact safety and comfort. A little preparation now can make a big difference later. Ask yourself: Are we ready for winter?

Check Your Supplies

Start by reviewing essential items and stocking up before bad weather hits:
  • Medications: Ensure prescriptions are filled and extra refills are on hand.
  • Food & Water: Keep several days’ worth of easy-to-prepare meals and bottled water.
  • Medical Supplies: Have extra incontinence products, gloves, wound care items, and batteries for medical devices.
  • Emergency Kit: Include flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, hand warmers, and a first-aid kit.

Plan for Power Outages

Losing power can be especially challenging for seniors. Make a plan ahead of time:
  • Know how long medical equipment can operate without electricity.
  • Keep backup batteries or a generator if needed.
  • Write down important phone numbers and keep them accessible.

Focus on Warmth and Safety

Cold weather increases fall risk and health concerns:
  • Ensure walkways are clear of ice and snow.
  • Encourage sturdy, non-slip footwear.
  • Dress in layers and keep the home at a safe, comfortable temperature.

Stay Connected

Bad weather can lead to isolation:
  • Arrange regular check-in calls or visits.
  • Identify a neighbor or nearby family member who can help in an emergency.

Review the Plan Together

Take time to talk through the plan with your loved one. Knowing what to expect can reduce anxiety and help everyone feel more secure.

Preparing for winter doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By checking supplies and having a clear plan in place, caregivers can help ensure seniors stay safe, warm, and supported all season long.
