How Immunizations Can Help Seniors Stay Healthy

How Immunizations Can Help Seniors Stay Healthy
August 8, 2019
Since elderly seniors are more prone to getting infections, it can be critical for them to stay on top of their health. One way for seniors to combat illnesses and stay healthy is to get vaccinated when appropriate. Here are the top vaccinations recommended by the CDC for adults 65 and older:
(Influenza)
Flu season isn’t too far away, and the influenza virus can be a severe health issue for seniors who have a weak immune system. Vaccines are designed to ward off the latest and most common strain of the disease, so getting a flu shot annually is vital. In some cases, a higher dose of the flu vaccine may be necessary for certain elderly seniors. Check with your physician to learn if a stronger flu vaccine is the right choice.
Shingles – (Zoster)
Another common problem for elderly seniors is shingles. Shingles are painful rashes and inflammation of the skin that comes from the same virus that causes chickenpox. The shingles vaccine can prevent or minimize these painful outbreaks.Â
It’s important to know that shingles are highly contagious, and anyone who has been infected should stay away from:
- Anyone who has never had the chickenpox
- Anyone who has not had the chickenpox vaccine
- Pregnant women
Pneumonia – (Pneumococcal)Â
Since many seniors have a weakened immune system, they are more likely to develop pneumonia. Pneumonia is contagious and spreads from person to person through coughing or sneezing. Pneumonia can also trigger other types of infections, such as:
- Ear infections
- Sinus infections
- Meningitis
- BacteremiaÂ
If you are a caregiver of an elderly loved one, consult their doctor to decide on which immunizations are best for them.
