How to Cope When Your Loved One Has Alzheimer’s

How to Cope When Your Loved One Has Alzheimer’s
March 22, 2019

When your loved one has Alzheimer’s, it can often feel like you are walking a long and lonely road. However, don’t despair. There are many ways that you and your loved one can overcome the effects of the disease and continue to create many happy memories together. One of the most important things to remember during this journey is that there are others who are walking alongside you. You and your family don’t have to face this disease alone.
Here are 3 things that you can do when your loved one has Alzheimer’s that can help you cope:
1. Join a Support Group
Our team at The Arbors knows how challenging and disheartening it can sometimes be to have a loved one with Alzheimer’s. Participating in support groups can help you find friends and partners who are walking the same path as you. Support groups are also excellent resources in remaining educated about Alzheimer’s disease.
2. Practice Self-Care
During this time it is important to protect your physical and mental well-being. Establish boundaries for yourself, your family, and your loved one. Caregiver burnout is a real thing and taking some time away from your loved one is not selfish. Take a few hours and go to the spa, or go for a walk. You will come back more refreshed and better able to handle any stresses or obstacles that may come your way. It is easy to lose yourself in the care of your loved one, but it is important to remember that you have a life apart from them too.
3. Participate in Activities
There is an unending list of things that you can do with your family and your loved one through support groups and in your community. Encouraging your family member to participate in activities is an excellent way to combat the adverse effects of Alzheimer’s and will also leave your family member happier. Staying connected with your elderly loved one is good for both of you.
Having a loved one who has Alzheimer’s can be taxing, frightening, and disheartening. Focus on positive things and don’t be afraid to ask for help and support. We understand that assisting a loved one around the clock can be stressful. If you are experiencing caregiver burnout and need help caring for your aging loved one, The Arbors Assisted Living can help. Contact us today to learn more.
