Asthma as You Age & How It Affects You

Asthma as You Age & How It Affects You
August 24, 2016
Did you know that 1 in 14 people suffer from asthma in the United States? With more than 24 million people living with this respiratory disease, it can be tough to keep the symptoms under control. As you age, asthma should be a concern that all adults should be aware of and knowledgeable about.
Late Development
Asthma is a disease that can develop in any stage of a person’s life, not just as a kid like most people believe. It can be harder to diagnose in the later years of life due to other health concerns like heart disease and emphysema, or just from natural aging. The medication for asthma also poses a threat to seniors, as they are more prone to experience its side effects.
Speak With Your Physician
Like any other medical concern, you should always consult your doctor to find out if you have asthma. If you are already diagnosed, you can speak with them on how to better control this disease. All of your current medications should be taken into effect when you are looking for a new medication to treat your asthma. Remember to always be honest with your doctor about how you’re feeling and what medications you’re taking.
Avoid Attacks
You can experience asthma symptoms regularly, but every once in awhile you might have an asthma attack. To avoid these attacks and worsening the symptoms, avoid all kinds of smoke, take the right medication, and stay away from certain allergens like dust and pollen. If you feel like your asthma symptoms are worsening, immediately consult a doctor. Even if your asthma isn’t acting up, visit your doctor every 6 months for a checkup.
With age, asthma can develop in those who never had it before, or worsen for those who have already been diagnosed. Whether you have asthma or any other health concern, know that doctors are on call 24/7 at The Arbors communities.
