Why Regular Eye Exams are Necessary for Seniors

August 2, 2019

Not only do regular eye exams help ensure that your prescriptions are correct, but it can be a way to detect other health conditions too. Annual eye exams are key to eye health. Here’s why having your eyes checked annually can help keep your peepers in tip-top shape!

Common Eye Problems for Seniors

As we get older, we are more at risk for eye conditions. Early detection is key to long-lasting eye health. Seniors may be more prone to the following eye problems:

  • Cataracts
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Dry eyes
  • Low vision

Warning Signs of Eye Disease

When it comes to your eyesight, it’s important to pay careful attention to any changes between exams. Don’t ignore the following symptoms and see your eye care professional as soon as possible to protect your eyes:

  • Suddenly seeing spots in your field of vision
  • Sudden or consistent eye pain, redness, swelling, and itchiness
  • Double vision
  • Sudden blind spot in one eye
  • Narrowing field of view
  • Blurry and distorted vision
  • Poor night vision
  • Colors seem less vivid
  • Halos around lights

How to Prevent or Delay Eye Disease

While you can’t prevent eye disease 100%, there are some things you can do healthwise to decrease your chances of developing an eye problem. Here are some tips:

  • Discuss with your eye doctor your family history to learn your risk of developing eye disease
  • Have regular exams to check for diabetes and high blood pressure
  • Stay active and exercise
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet
  • Quit smoking
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays
  • Pay attention to the warning signs and symptoms listed above
  • Stick to your annual eye exams
