Independent At-Home vs. Assisted Living

Independent At-Home vs. Assisted Living

For an older adult, the choice between assisted living and independent at-home living usually depends on how comfortable the individual is living alone or with a family member. Daily activities include, but are not limited to: preparing meals, personal hygiene, managing medications, completing household chores, driving/coordinating transportation, and maintaining personal finances. Someone who has difficulty with any of these daily activities can hire an in-home agency, or may want to consider the maintenance-free lifestyle of an assisted living community. The challenge of living at home is the lack of socialization and stimulation that you would get from an Assisted Living community.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is a great option for individuals who have difficulty with daily activities at home. Residents at assisted living communities are free to live an independent lifestyle, but also receive regular support for a range of daily activities. Housekeeping and maintenance services are included in the monthly rental of an apartment, along with laundry services, utilities, transportation and meals. Care services, such as medication management or assistance taking a shower, are also included at The Arbors. In addition to enjoying the peace of mind that comes from this maintenance-free lifestyle, residents can take advantage of a full calendar of social events, activities, exercise, trips, and countless opportunities for social engagement.

Independent At-home Living

In contrast to assisted living, independent at-home living is for individuals who want to live independently and are willing to depend on family members or pay an agency to come in to take care of any necessary help.  All services, such as housekeeping, meals, and laundry would need to be taken care of by an in-home agency. As needs increase,  the cost would increase as well.
