Common Eye Drop Mistakes You’re Making

Common Eye Drop Mistakes You’re Making
August 16, 2017
Do you use prescription or over-the-counter eye drops regularly (or from time to time)? If so, do you know if you’re applying them correctly? You might think you are, but there are a few common mistakes most people make when using their trusty dropper.
Applying Multiple Drops At Once
On the instructions of eye drops it will tell you how many drops to apply and how often to apply them. Instead of taking the entire recommended dosage in one shot, spread each drop throughout the timeframe stated on the bottle. The eye can only hold one drop at a time, so don’t waste your drops!
Mixing Different Eye Drops
Warning: Do not apply all of your eye drops at once! For those with multiple prescriptions (or those who also use over-the-counter drops), apply them during different periods throughout the day. When too many drops are applied at once, they can combine to cause watery eyes — which cause the drops to be less effective.
Skipping Eye Drops When You Go to The Doctor
There’s a common misconception that because you’re going to the doctor, you shouldn’t take any medicine. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Always take your prescriptions, even when headed to the doctor’s office — unless your physician states otherwise.
Applying Drops Wrong
- When applying eye drops, do not aim toward the inner portion of the eye as it can collect near the nose and drip downward. Instead, apply your drops toward the outer portion of the eye.
- Place your finger in the area where your eye meets your nose to stop drops from dripping; do not dab with a tissue as the drops will be absorbed by the tissue, not your eye.
- Take out contacts before applying any type of eye drops, other than artificial tears.
- Do not blink rapidly after receiving eye drops as this will push out some of the drops. Instead, blink as you normally would or close your eyes altogether.
Applying eye drops may sound like a simple task, but you’d be surprised to see how many people are doing it wrong. For other useful tips and information, visit our blog!
