The Dangers of Seniors Living Alone in Winter

The Dangers of Seniors Living Alone in Winter
According to AARP, nearly 90% of people over age 65 want to stay at home for as long as possible. Research indicates that a staggering number of seniors who should be receiving assisted living care are still living at home — in many cases, alone.
During the winter months, ice, snow and cold temperatures can make life challenging for everyone. Shockingly, it is estimated that one person needlessly dies every seven minutes in winter. Slippery sidewalks and cold weather can cause a wide range of injuries and illnesses – especially for seniors.
Loneliness – An epidemic affecting seniors, loneliness is even more of a threat when the nights draw in. People can easily become isolated by not wanting to or being able to leave the house due to the cold.
Health Risks – Even if the season is not particularly harsh, low temperatures make us more vulnerable to colds and sore throats, which are far more dangerous to those who are not young or healthy.
Lack of exercise – Due to being less likely to leave the house in winter, older people can suffer from a lack of exercise.
Supply of food and medicine – While most of us are able to run to the supermarket even if it’s freezing or snowing, that is not the case for everyone.
Poor Nutrition – Because people spend more time indoors and may eat a smaller variety of foods, nutritional deficits – especially Vitamin D deficiency – can be a problem
Falling on ice – Slippery, icy pavements are a hazard for everyone at winter – but falls can have catastrophic consequences for vulnerable people.
Dress for Warmth – Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia. According to the CDC, more than half of hypothermia-related deaths were of people over the age of 65.
Power Outages – Winter storms can lead to power outages.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – Using a fireplace, gas heater or lanterns can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Poor Eyesight – Poor eyesight can cause many tripping hazards around the house, as well as lead to mistakes in medication management, which can be deadly.
