Why Seniors Should Dance More

Why Seniors Should Dance More
September 14, 2017
Seniors should participate in some sort of exercise or physical activity for 30 minutes every single day. A good mixture of exercise includes resistance training, stretching, and aerobics. For your aerobics, why not do something fun — like dancing!
Benefits of Dancing
- Can be adjusted so it can be enjoyed at any age and any fitness level
- Dancing elevates your heart rate which will pump oxygen faster, thus working the heart muscle regularly
- Improves energy levels, overall mood, and memory
- Reduces risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes
Assists With Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is needed for those who are coming off of surgery, an extended illness, or for those with weak muscles and low levels of strength. Dancing will force seniors to move in ways that are different from their normal day-to-day movements. As a result, seniors will experience improved balance, a higher level of stamina, and increased walking speed.
Types of Dancing
Senior dance and aerobics classes are easy to follow along and can be enjoyed at one’s own pace. Some types of dancing include:
- Low-Impact Aerobics
- Chair Aerobics
- Salsa
- Jazz
- Tap
- Ballroom
