How the Sun, Heat, and Drugs Can Affect Your Body

A+ A-

summer dangers | assisted living | long island

What’s better than going for a relaxing stroll during the summertime? While your walk might be soothing for your mind, it can have some negative effects on your body if you’re not careful. Between the sun, heat, and any medication you might be taking, a mixture of the three can cause some dangerous side effects.

Sunshine Labels
There are a lot of drugs with side effects that can increase a person’s chances of getting sunburn, heat stroke, and dehydration. When taking a variety of medications, consult your doctor and ask which ones will have these side effects, If any of yours do, label them so you know which ones can cause this.

Make the Switch
So the above medications are now labeled — wonderful! However, if you’re taking these medications every day, that won’t change the side effects that you’d experience. Ask your physician if there are any substitutes that do not have any harmful side effects when exposed to high temperatures or the rays of the sun. If you could switch your medication (even for just the summer) just to stay in the warming sun, wouldn’t you?

Sun Protection
If you’re going outside in the summertime, apply a sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher. Even if you are taking medications that increase the risk of sunburn, a proper sunscreen can block the ultraviolet rays. Remember to apply it inside and at least 20 minutes before exposing your skin to the sun. Additionally, you should dress in loose-fitting clothing so your chances of overheating also decline.
